Should mental health matter for entrepreneurs?
What type of mood comes to mind when you think of an entrepreneur? Do you think that they are constantly excited? Ambitious? Focused and stoic? Or maybe imaginative? As a fellow entrepreneur, I can confidently tell you (with all due respect) that you likely have no idea.
Entrepreneurship does NOT occur in a neatly packaged way or in a straight line. So, the mind of a person traveling this road will too experience unexpected turns. Because of this, entrepreneurs need supports to maintain the best mental health while striving for it all in business.
"Entrepreneurs put themselves in a position where they gamble their stability and livelihood for a vision..."
You might be thinking, entrepreneurs are just PEOPLE, right? They only need the typical support that common folks need. But, that is only partly true. Entrepreneurs put themselves in a position where they gamble their stability and livelihood for a vision, face risk, disappointment, new levels of #success, feelings of uncertainty and more, day in and day out. Being in front of so many #obstacles and challenges so often tests their resolve more than the non-entrepreneur is tested in these ways. So, on an entrepreneur’s looooong to-do list, they MUST also actively/continuously add to their toolkit--the toolkit used for maintaining optimum mental health. Having crumbling mental health will only create a cycle of turmoil. This is because if we aren’t mentally well, how can we work toward our dreams on a daily basis? In a mentally unwell state, we feel lethargic. We talk ourselves out of putting out a new product by giving into fear. We avoid networking as needed because of our anxiety and assuming others will see that as soon as they look us in the eye.
These very points are what I sat down and talked about with fitness and entrepreneurial powerhouse, Amir “MirMadness”;Certified personal trainer, #Herbalife coach and CEO of Family Restoration Services.
During our interview, he shared some of the things that he attributes to keeping #entrepreneurs like himself in great shape; both mentally and physically.
He gave a nod to setting priorities and routines as a primary key to establishing wellness habits.

In particular, his morning habits include prayer and an Herbalife shake at the least. He even talked about the importance of modeling these good habits for the sake of his son. Being intentional about what is a priority and the order in which these priorities are addressed are a part of his daily repertoire. Establishing priorities, helps inform the routines that we should set in place; and this, in turn, can impact how we are organized mentally and spiritually. In our inter
view, I noted that I felt a little embarrassed about how I didn’t put more emphasis on prayer as it relates to maintaining entrepreneurship. We both shared our inclusion of prayer in daily life. But Amir highlighted the weight of spiritual wellness on maintaining the entrepreneurial journey. Specifically, seeking assistance with operating ethically and morally at all times, being grateful for prosperity when it shows up in our businesses and asking for outcomes that we work for should be in our spiritual diet.

To me, the takeaway is that success in entrepreneurship does not occur without consideration of our #wellness. This wellness is multifaceted, not one dimensional. We reach this wellness by continuously setting forth action to satisfy priorities in the form of routines. This continuous action builds us, and as we rise into better formations at different stages of our entrepreneurship, we solidify our entrepreneurial personality of strength. This is how he has become a proverbial lion—as he refers to himself. This #strength translates into positive outcomes in our business. And at the end of the day, the #positivity that we model is being watched and imitated by those watching us—both in our communities and in our households.
